Happy May the 4th for all who celebrate.

My own day is off to a pretty rad start. Scored some good SW sales, was inspired by the reel posted by a voice actor I very much admire, and realized he liked my story.

Later: pizza, cake, and a special D&D session. Round out the day finishing up the remaining episodes of Andor that are out currently.

Last night, since I knew I needed to be up early today, I decided to try a new kind of melatonin that I'd recently acquired. It's melatonin that comes infused in tasty little chocolates! I was careful to make sure I took the correct dosage, as one must when trying something new. One chocolate = one mg of melatonin, which is my standard dosage. Cool.

Not cool. Oh man. It wiped me out fast, but every time I closed my eyes I would get really dizzy, and then I would feel really nauseous. It got so bad that I was sure I was going to be sick, so I crept downstairs to hole up in the spare bathroom as not to wake up everybody if I started throwing up. I didn't, luckily, but it was close. As long as I remained upright with my eyes open, it was fine, but it was difficult on account of the melatonin doing its job and making me really, really want to fall asleep.

It was rough, but the effects faded after about an hour or so, and I was finally able to go to sleep. Had an insanely wild, vivid dream, too.

But I was able to get up early with no real issue, and I made it to Riverside for The (Inland) Empire Strikes Back just before it opened.

What a fun time! It wasn't huge, but it was big enough: around fifty or sixty vendors, half a dozen food trucks, and tons of photo ops. They even had the landspeeder that all the actors on the set of Ahsoka liked to right around in, autographed by everybody, and I got to sit in it and take pictures and stuff.

Some droid builders brought their fully functional remote controlled droids, so there was an R2D2 and a Rex roaming around. The cast of Skeleton Crew was there, they had raffles for cool stuff, and there were lightsaber demonstrations. Plus, there was lots of great cosplay. I'm very glad I heard about this event at the last second and was able to go!

It was HOT out today though, and the event was held outdoors in a fenced off park that was closed to non-event people for today. Unfortunately when I thought I had packed two water bottles, I had only packed one, so when I was done with it I started to get very thirsty. I could have patronized one of the food trucks but drinks were hella expensive and the lines were oppressively long. So I just stuck it out.

Then when I left, I made a bee line for the nearby gas station, bought two Gatorades, and pounded them both right there in my car. Ya girl sure enough got her electrolytes back in order, and those cold blue Gatorades were sublime.

Now I'm sleepy.

I'm more or less settled.

Today is the first day I haven't had to spend my free time doing hard physical labor of some kind. All I had to do was dump another donation of books at the library, mail a package, and pop into the store for some food. I also got myself some boba, as a treat, for all my hard work. And because, even though it is still March, it's already 75 degrees outside.

I've still got some stuff to organize and put away, but that's pretty much just at my own pace, or as long as I can handle leaving these boxes in the middle of my bedroom floor, heh. I've also got wifi now! And I've been bonding with the little dog my cousins have, Duke, who is the sweetest yet shyest little boy. I don't think anyone really pays much attention to him; he was my cousins' mother's dog, and they kept him when she passed away late last year. I love him, and he has taken quite the shine to me, the little attention-starved baby.

This weekend there is a Star Wars event I caught wind of, called The (Inland) Empire Strikes Back, which will be held at a park in Riverside that is known for hosting festivals and other events. I've already got a ticket, so I'm going to go. It won't be anything huge, but they'll have vendors, food trucks, raffles, lightsaber demonstrations, and part of the cast of Skeleton Crew is gonna be there for photos and autographs, so that's pretty cool! If nothing else, it'll be fun to be out and about and surrounded by other Star Wars fans. I'll have to remember to take some bracelets along to give out.

I'm reading a Star Wars novel called Black Spire by Delilah S. Dawson, and this passage felt particularly... relevant.

-

"The First Order?" Dolin asked. "I heard they weren't even real. Just people wearing old Imperial costumes to frighten children."

At that, Vi sat forward and pinned him with a dizzy but firm glare. "The First Order is very real. They blew up the Galactic Senate on Hosnian Prime. They blew up the entire Hosnian system. I lost friends in the cataclysm. I saw the rubble left behind. And if they're on this planet now, you're going to want to stay out of their way. Believe me. I know."

"If the First Order is real, they would never come here," the old woman said knowingly, shaking her head for emphasis. Her earlier good mood had fled. "There's nothing here they want. We're a quiet place. Mind our own business. Not like those rich planets. Not like Coruscant." Her nose wrinkled up as she said it.

Vi closed her eyes, her head in her hands.

That's what everyone always believes. It won't happen to us. We don't look for trouble. We're not doing anything wrong. We're not important enough. That's what the skittermouse says to itself as the ebon hawk glides overhead, right up until it feels the chill of shadow and bite of talons.

If you like Star Wars and you like drabbles, may I interest you in taking a look at [community profile] starwars100?

They post two prompts every Sunday, and you can write anything you want! All media, from the movies and shows to the video games and novels and even comics, are game. Write original characters too, if you want! I love this community and want to see it succeed, but sadly there are only like two or three active writers presently, which doesn't exactly bode well for the life of a writing community.

Anyway if you're into writing bite sized snippets of fiction about a galaxy far, far away, have yourself a look and jump on in!

So! I adore these little guys.

These BD-X droid models have been a long-time work in progress. They were finally released officially into Batuu at the start of the Season of the Force event, running from April 12 - June 2nd. They underwent frequent "training" sessions, wherein people could watch as they learned how to do various things such as interact with people and other droids, jump, dance, scan items, and identify objects based on prompts of color, size, ect, and even just play with one another.

Their names are based on the first letter of their color, in Aurebesh. So, the blue one is called Besh, which is 'B' in Aurebesh. The green one is Grek, for 'G,' and the orange one is Osk, for 'O,' though they call him Osk-er (said like Oscar). There is rumored to be a red one also, but I never saw it, and I have heard that it rarely ever appeared due to several serious mechanical malfunctions.

They have independent personalities! Besh tends to be a little full of himself, loving attention and often hamming it up by striking dramatic poses for onlookers. Osk is very playful and silly. Grek tends to be a little more timid, and can be easily upset; he is frequently seen cowering when afraid, drooping when he fails to correctly complete a task, or discouraging excessive silliness in the other two.

Over time, frequent observers will begin to learn more of the finer details. They are often competitive with one another, for example. It is also seemingly a part of their programming for them to, upon spotting a small child dressed as a Disney princess, bow to them. I've also seen them react to roaming Stormtroopers; Grek crouched down with his antennae back and quivered in anxiety, while Osk actually executed a rather impressive (and amusing) side-stepping maneuver to try and sneak past them. If they see something they don't like, their eyes will flash red and they will make a displeased sound, sometimes shaking their heads to convey their dislike.

Basically, they insanely cute and honestly, kind of a marvel of engineering. I really hope they return, because for Disney to go to the trouble of creating such incredible little additions to the land and then just shelve them after a few months seems insane to me. I love them very much.

I couldn't get the videos to embed, but you can view a handful of shorts where I've uploaded them to YouTube: HERE!

Also a pair of photos under the cut.

Today was my final day getting to use my Magic Key to go to Disneyland before it gets blacked out for the summer. It's also the final week of Season of the Force, so all the Star Wars extras they've given us (Hyperspace Mountain, the new scenes in Star Tours, and most importantly, the BD-X droids) are all going away. Sad. Still holding out hope they might decide to keep the BD-Xs. I don't talk about them much but they are amazing and wonderful and I love them so much and I should make an entire post about them trying to explain to everyone exactly what they are and why they are so, so good.

I'll need to work out the best way of uploading video. Any tips?

In just one more day, it will be June 1st. One more day until I can say to my girlfriend (!!!) "I'm gonna see you next month!" Also one week until my birthday, which I've got mixed feelings about. I think I'm going to treat myself to lunch and a massage, but I'm afraid I can't get much more creative than that. At least I haven't yet. Maybe I'll splurge and buy a couple of books from my wishlist?

Some things I've watched lately: Dead Boy Detectives is probably at the top of the list in terms of enjoyment. Finished Fallout, watched the first half of the new season of Bridgerton, and chewed up Jurassic World: Chaos Theory in one afternoon. Also finally watched Late Night With the Devil.

Alive!

May the 4th was a lovely lil' holiday for this SW nerd.

Otherwise, really my life hasn't been all that interesting. Working, sleeping, doing chores, working on my cosplay, and trying to keep plugging along at my IT courses. I'm not as far along as I'd hoped to be by now, but I'm still trying!

We had a series of earthquakes where I live, the other day. That was kind of exciting.

But also, the AC at work broke last week, which means we were all toiling away in tiny, stuffy, hot rooms doing hard physical labor and sweating through our scrubs all day. I am hoping against hope that they've fixed it by the time I go in tomorrow.

Thinking about trying acupuncture. We have an in-house acupuncturist at the clinic where I work, and as an employee I'd get a really steep discount. I've heard nothing but good things and accounts from people who swear by it. Has anyone here had any experience with acupuncture? I'm severely needle-phobic and all my instincts are telling me to stay away, but I really would like to give it a shot if I can swing it.

I've only got two more visits to Disneyland before my Magic Key blacks out for the whole summer, boo. I'm gonna have to really make them count!

I also just signed up for [community profile] intoabar and am immediately anxious about it. I haven't written anything other than drabbles in a really long time.

Man.

Time just keeps getting away from me.

I forget to come here and blog. I forget to read my feed. I forget to do much else that isn't sleeping, working, hanging with my girlfriend (!!! still not used to saying that!) or grinding out a few choice special interests.

I forgot I had a bill due tomorrow, I will have to pay it post-haste right after I finish this entry!

I forgot I had a drabble for [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles due in like a day and a half! Anyone want to ghost write it for me? No? Okay. Better get my ass in gear, then.

I went to the after-hours Star Wars Nite event at Disneyland a couple of days ago and it rocked. The park empty, except for die hard SW fans. Tons of very tasty limited edition food. Cosplayers everywhere. Character meet and greets (Luke and Leia, R2, C3PO, Fennec Shand, Ahsoka, Mando, Boba Fett, Queen Amidala, Ewoks, Darths Vader and Maul, Captain Phasma, Hera and Chopper!), an awesome lightsaber meetup, an Imperial march, a dance party at the hub and all down Main Street, all the rides a walk-on! Definitely would do again, so hopefully they hold the same event next year.

My roommate left the sliding glass door open for too long and a mosquito eater came inside and is menacing me. By menacing I just mean scaring me, since I know they are harmless to humans and are in fact good to have around but they are BIG AND SCARY LOOKING AND I HATE IT. My brain is also telling me to itch which is ridiculous.

Two of my co-workers are gone on vacation which means I am ultra busy at work. Which is fine? I can take extra shifts to cover for them, and to earn myself bigger paychecks, which I will need. Oh yes, I will need.

Better get back on top of my game. Sigh.
southernmedicine: (i'm listening)

So!

Some of you might know this, some might not, but a new(ish) trend at conventions of all kinds is to hand bracelets out to actors and artists, cosplayers who are cosplaying from the same Thing as you, or really just anyone you want to trade with or befriend.

As That Person and I are working on our cosplays and getting hype for the cons we're going to wear them to, I thought I'd dig through the garage and dust off some of my old crafting supplies. We're cosplaying from Star Wars, so I figured (at least to start) that's where I'd focus.

This is what I've got so far.

This Is The Way
Shin <3 Hottie
<3 Sabine <3
Jedi
Sith
I Am No Jedi
Rebel
Rebel Scum
WolfWren
Padawan
Nightsister
Bright Suns
Trust Only In The Force

So, I pose this question to any SW fans who might be reading this: What else should I make? What would you like to receive, as a fan, if you encountered someone passing out friendship bracelets? Barring that, what do you think other people would like? I'm really only super active in a couple of strategically placed areas in the fandom, so! Opinions sought.
southernmedicine: (i'm listening)
I am sick. Hooray and huzzah.

I was absolutely petrified to call in sick to work this morning, because I've only been working there for about a month and a half now and I know how important to the doctor it is that we avoid same-day call-ins whenever possible to avoid pissing off patients who have had their appointments booked for awhile. But... I felt like hot garbage, and I was winded just getting up to use the bathroom and get a drink of water, and I knew there was no way I could do five back to back hours of deep tissue massage without passing tf out, so I just... psyched myself up and called.

And all three people I ended up speaking to on the phone remarked upon how terrible I sounded, and then the doctor's wife posted to the group chat about how if we're feeling ill we shouldn't push through, so I felt better having her on my side, too.

I was going to try and tough it out but I'm really, really glad that I decided not to. I slept most of the day and I'm still tired. This is the first I've been out of bed since lunch time, when I managed a little food. I had to reschedule my root canal too, which was scheduled for tomorrow, but uhhhhh yeah that's not going to happen right now.

I accidentally started shipping a new pairing and I don't really know what to do with myself. It's been awhile since I've shipped something new! In the Star Wars fandom, too, which is more interesting still since I wasn't big time into this fandom until just this year. It's an easy ship to like when the cast is in on it too, and very publicly support and applaud the ship (in a non-baity way, which I know has been an issue with casts before).

So, if you like Star Wars, you enjoy femslash, and you're into the rivals/enemies-to-lovers trope, may I submit WolfWren, or Sabine Wren/Shin Hati? If it weren't such a pain to post images here on DW I'd share a few, but instead I'll leave it to you, dear reader, to ferret out some fanart if your interest is piqued.

I'm excited to search AO3 for it for the first time, and see what's out there.

Anyway. Honestly, not much has been going on with me. I don't have anything to write at the moment, which feels weird, but I'm so busy and sick and stressed and agitated lately that it's probably a good thing I haven't got any looming deadlines.

Hope you're all doing okay, friends.
