30. What are some of the best things you have watched this year? I'm just looking for recs tbh. asked by Jenny form Discord

I've watched some pretty good stuff this year. Fun fact! I actually keep a log of everything I watch each year, so I can look back and see my... haha, accomplishment, I guess? Progress? It started in 2020 during lockdown, when I was stuck in the house for months and had very little to do other than knock things off my watch list, and I was curious as to how much stuff a person could watch when they had almost no day to day responsibilities. It stuck, so now I just continue to log everything.

TV Shows:

Abbott Elementary. Sweet, fun comedy in the style of The Office and Parks and Rec.
All Of Us Are Dead. Korean zombie series.
Barry. Very clever dark comedy.
Couples Therapy. Exactly what it says on the tin.
First Kill. Lesbians! Enemies to lovers trope!
Heartstopper. One of the sweetest things I've ever seen.
House of the Dragon. Healing the wounds Game of Thrones left behind.
I Love That For You. I'm not sure what the appeal was but I couldn't stop watching it.
A League of Their Own. I don't like baseball, but I loved this.
Our Flag Means Death. I mean???? Chef's kiss.
The Sandman. Absolutely beautiful.
The Serpent Queen. In the style of The Great, if you've ever seen that. About Catherine Medici.
She Hulk. The fanboy gatekeepers tried to keep this show down, but it's a fucking delight.
Uncoupled. NPH is a delight as always. Fun and introspective both.

Movies:

The 355. Pretty decent female-led spy/action movie.
The Black Phone. Solid creepy movie. Not "scary," but good.
Bullet Train. Good, stylish, funny action flick with some fun cameos.
Don't Worry Darling. I know it's become a meme, but I actually really liked it.
Everything, Everywhere, All The Time. I guarantee you've never seen anything like it.
Fresh. A ride for sure. I'm never dating again.
Good Luck To You, Leo Grande. Adventures in self esteem and acceptance.
Nope. Jordan Peele has never made a movie I didn't love.
Prey. Predator prequel, and very well done.

By no means an exhaustive list, but some of the gems I've found during this year.

And that's it, folks. AMA over. I'm kind of glad, actually. It was fun just babbling about stuff every day, but I was starting to feel bad about posting every day. I hope nobody felt spammed. Thanks to anyone to asked a question, and to anyone who read my answers!

29. What are your top 5 OTPs of all time? Do they differ from your current top 5? asked by Brenna from Skype

I think my current Top 5 definitely differs from my All Time Top 5, yeah!

My current Top 5 include Jim Kirk/Leonard McCoy from Star Trek AOS, Erik Lehnsherr and Charles Xavier from X-Men (the movies as well as the comics, actually!), Sirius Black and Remus Lupin from Harry Potter, Yelena Belova and Kate Bishop from Hawkeye, and Jim Moriarty and Sebastian Moran from BBC Sherlock. These are in no particular order.

If we're talking all time, I think Jack O'Neill and Daniel Jackson would have a spot, because they were one of my first and I shipped them for such a very long time. X-Men's Gambit and Rogue probably deserve a spot in there somewhere too. They're still perfect for each other, classic, among my firsts and a solid favorite, I just don't pay much attention to them these days. Rachel and Tobias from Animorphs are very OG as well. Now that I think about it, they might have been an OTP before even my first Sailormoon ship. Oh man.

So yeah, they definitely differ!

-

I! Am! So! Sick! Of! Ants!

They are back again and I'm getting ready to just burn the house down. The bitch of it is that my roommate had this enormous infestation upstairs yesterday. They were coming out of the bathroom tiles, swarming the shower, then forming a trail that went all along the ceiling and into his closet, where they swarmed again in his clothes hamper. No idea why they would do that. So we had the exterminator back today. But he did a terrible job. He was here for all of ten minutes, spraying quickly, leaving us a stack of traps to arrange, and completely missing the mark. There were whole-ass trails outside after he left, and also, they started emerging into the kitchen once he was gone. Not sure what he even succeeded in doing, but my roommate made a call and they are coming back again tomorrow.

It probably doesn't help that the heat came back with a vengeance. It was 102 degrees here today, and I am just overall d o n e, my dudes.

Slowly chipping away at some RP replies I owe, and will maybe finishing editing the first of my Halloween challenge fics tonight. Here's hoping.
southernmedicine: (like it is)
28. What characters have you roleplayed as? asked by Danny from Discord

Ahh, lots. A whole parade of OCs over the course of my RP career, for starters.

Jubilee from X-Men was one of my first canons, before I even knew what the word 'canon' meant. Schuldich from Weiss Kreuz. Rachel from Animorphs. Dean Winchester from Supernatural, Sherlock Holmes, John Watson, and Jim Moriarty from BBC Sherlock. Jack O'Neil and Daniel Jackson from Stargate: SG-1. Donna Noble from Doctor Who. Remus Lupin from Harry Potter. Derek Hale from Teen Wolf. Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto from, again, X-Men, though this time from the reboot/prequel movies. Illya Kuryakin and Gaby Teller from The Man From Uncle. Leonard McCoy from AOS Trek, of course, and recently I've also tried my hand vaguely at Jim Kirk and Gaila.

There are more, it's just that it's 2am and I can't remember them all at the moment.

-

It's hot again, and I'm not impressed. Tomorrow is supposed to be the last truly hot day before it cools back down again, and hopefully this time it stays down.

I went and saw Don't Worry Darling today, and while I was worried that the best part about it might be the hilarious behind-the-scenes discourse, I actually ended up liking it quite a bit! Florence Pugh really carried the hell out of that movie.

Afterward, I stopped at Trader Joe's and found a Black Tea & Boba ice cream, which is chef's kiss. Tastes like someone made me some black milk tea with boba and then stuck it in the freezer. Delicious.

I am in another slump. I have a ton of fics to work on. I have a bunch of RPs awaiting replies. But I simply cannot write at the moment, for whatever reason. Maybe the heat? Maybe I'm getting another case of the sads and am really needing my therapy appointment this week. Whatever the case, all I can bring myself to do is binge episodes of this pizza cooking competition I discovered called Best In Dough.

Hope you're all well!

Missed a day, whoops, and just barely. Guess I'll do two-for-one.

26. What five things would one place in a pentagram to summon you? aked by Maria from Facebook

I've seen this question make its rounds around social media, but I still love it because it's fun and interesting. I'll try to keep it things one might put in an actual summoning circle instead of naming silly things, but they'll still be relevant for reasons.

A crow feather, a moonstone, a coyote bone, a tea bag, and a vial of rain water.

(If I wasn't taking it seriously, I'd say, like, a funko pop, a succulent, a comic book, a pack of Reese's cups, and a pair of whimsical socks.)

27. What are some of your non-fannish intrests? asked by [personal profile] quailfence

It feels like all my interests are fannish, but that's only because I have a way of connecting everything I care about to a fandom somehow. Don't we all?

Trying to veer away from it, though, I love space (as a focus of science and as an aesthetic), animals, the occult, true crime, hockey, curling, figure skating, baking, swimming, dinosaurs and archaeology, theme parks, museums, mythology and folklore.

Thanks for asking!
southernmedicine: (a little rough)
25. What true crime podcast and/or book would you recommend? asked by [personal profile] pianogurl330

I like My Favorite Murder, Last Podcast on the Left, and Someone Knows Something for true crime.

Thanks for asking!

Wow, shortest answer all month, I think.

There's another heatwave. I'm not impressed. Honestly, I spent most of the weekend napping, so I have absolutely nothing to talk about. Oi.

24. Since I know you love horror and monsters, what are some of your fave monsters/supernatural creatures? asked by Bri from Discord

Excellent question! I am a ho for all things paranormal. Urban legends, mythology, ghost stories, monsters, give me all of it.

At the top of my list is werewolves, all day every day. I also love my homegirl Medusa.

Black shuck, kitsune, phoenix, lamia, harpies, siren, cerberus!

Thanks for asking, I just love supernatural things.
southernmedicine: (chair)
23. Who is your favourite character you cosplayed? Maybe even with pictures.:D asked by [personal profile] dr_zook

Hello! My cosplay resume list is insane, actually, so this is a hard one.

Quistis from FF8 will always hold a special place in my heart, because it was my first cosplay and it was actually pretty damned good, and I actually did look like her at the time so I got a lot of compliments. A few pictures of this exist, but as they were taken by a throw-away camera, I'd have to go digging around in scrapbooks and old photo boxes to try and find them. I might, for a Halloween post or something!

I really loved getting to cosplay Bones, though technically it was just a Halloween costume since I wore it for a Halloween party. For some reason, there aren't any pictures of this, but! I'm going to be revisiting it for Star Trek Las Vegas next summer, so there will be plenty then.

I loved cosplaying Ciel Phantomhive from Black Butler, because I went all out with all the details and it ended up turning out pretty well in my opinion. This one I can provide a couple of pictures of.

Under the cut!

22. Are there any fandoms/ships you want to write a fic for but haven’t yet? asked by Darcy from Discord

Oh, sure. I get ideas for all kinds of fandoms and characters, but I either don't feel like I know enough about the fandom or don't have a good grasp on the characters I'd want to write a fic for.

Loki, for example. A favorite! Not sure I could do him justice. I think Marvel in general is a little intimidating to me on account of it being under such scrutiny all the time.

I'd love to write some big elaborate mission fic for The Man From Uncle but that's pretty far out of my comfort zone unfortunately.

Tonight I'm heading to a tiny hole in the wall venue to see a couple of bands! I'll be out late and then I have to come home and crash, because I've got an early shift tomorrow and a full schedule. I've got to start getting ready here in the next hour or so, but man, I am moving through one of those phases where I'd rather lay around and sleep than go out and do anything. Even if I'm excited to go! Is this fatigue? Is this depression? Who can say?
southernmedicine: (keep it to yourself)
I missed a day, whoops. Two today!

20. Which three characters would you have a dinner party with? asked by [personal profile] reeby10

There are so many possible answers for this, most of them funny or interesting or profound, especially if I'm able to pull each one from a different universe. Since I've got perpetual Trek brainrot, I'll pick an easy one: Picard, SNW!Pike, and AOS!Kirk. Would love to hear about the adventures and the experiences in command from three very different captains (and three of my favorites).

21. Are there any foods that you used to hate that you really enjoy now? asked by Annie from Discord

Avocado is the big one. I used to hate it for some reason, when I was young and stupid. If I ordered some sort of sandwich that came with it, I would ask for it to be removed, and the server would ask me if I was sure haha. Now I love it, of course. Can't get enough.

Also, when I was a little kid, I absolutely refused to eat Chinese food. I have no idea why. By the time I was in middle school it was one of my favorite types of food, and still is. Eat it all the time.

Thanks for asking!

19. What was the plot of the first fanfic you wrote? asked by Darcy from Discord

Huh. Well, I hesitate to call it a fanfic, but I guess technically it was. It was this wild, dumb story a friend and I wrote back and forth during freshman year of high school, loosely based off of Fushigi Yuugi including a harem of bishounen and intentionally bad Mary Sue protags. We never finished it, but it got weirder and weirder as we carried on. I may still have a copy of it someplace.

-

I have injured my foot, and I also feel pretty sick, though I'm sure it's just bad allergies. I'm sniffly, my ears hurt, my face feels tight and I'm just tired, so tired. I need to get well though because on Thursday night I'm going with a friend to see some bands in Anaheim. We're going to be out late, and I'm going to need to be on my feet. Then I get to crash for a few hours and get up early for work Friday morning. Looking forward to the fun, definitely not looking forward to the consequences.

Also am trying to sweet talk some of my friends into going with me to Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights. I think I'm wearing them down.

I've got three days off now, and I intend to sleep for a lot of that time, at least until I feel better. I'm almost done editing one of my fics for [personal profile] spook_me. Maybe I'll get that done tonight, if I don't fall asleep first.

18. What are all the pets you've ever had? asked by Jasmine from Discord

Many. So, so many.

Dogs

Muffin. Chow-chow, was in the family before I was born. My first pet.
Missy. Australian Shepherd/Shetland Sheepdog cross.
Sketch. Dachshund.
Missy II. Another Dachshund, brought into the family by my step-dad.
Kara. Coydog, mostly cross with German Shepherd and Australian Shepherd.
Mandy. My mom's Miniature Schnauzer.
Colby. My mom's second Schnauzer; sold as a mini, turned out to be a standard.

Birds

Silver. Cockatiel given to my mother by a friend.
Snowflake. Cockatiel we bought to replace Silver.
Juno. African Grey parrot.
Sammy. Pigeon. Found him as a baby and hand raised him.

Rodents

Hershey. Mouse.
Angel. Mouse.
Delta. Mouse.
Shadow. Mouse.
Kisa. Rat.
Rin. Rat.
Bones. Rat.
Sherlock. Rat.
Watson. Rat.
Remy. Rat.

Reptiles

Ayame. Ball Python. My biology teacher needed to rehome, and let me take one.
Severus. Ball Python.
Arkadion. Bearded Dragon.

Fish

About fifty goldfish, all told. They all had names, but I don't remember them all. These ranged from elementary school to just a few years ago.

About a dozen Betta fish. They too all had names, but I don't recall of them, either. Some of them in the recent years, though, have been Magnus, Peril, Cowboy, Cecil, and Perfect Carlos, with Cecil my longest living one, at a whopping five years.

Several Neon Tetras. I do not remember their names.

One crayfish. After using them in an elementary school experiment, I was allowed to bring mine home.

Misc.

Rikki. Ferret.
Snowball. Rabbit. Found him in the street, had to rehome eventually due to allergies.
Pandora. Cat. Again, found her. Rehomed her to a friend of mine, due to allergies. My friend renamed her Grace.

And now, I have none.

Kara was my faithful best friend of sixteen years, and passed away last April. I haven't had any animals since, and it's left a big hole in my life, if I'm honest. Mandy and Colby are still alive and well, but they live with my parents up in Washington state, and I haven't seen them in a few years.

16. Favorite pokemon! asked by Danny from Discord

Back when it was just one generation, Growlithe was my very first original fave. '

Overall, I love any pokemon that is doglike or foxlike, so pokemon like Growlithe and Arcanine, Vulpix and Ninetails (especially the Alolan ones, SO pretty!), all the Eeveelutions, Houndour and Houndoom, Poochyena and Mightyena, Yamper and Bolthund, Nickit and Thievul, ect ect.

15. What was your first ‘ship? asked by [personal profile] quailfence

Awhile ago I answered a similar question about what my first fandom was, and the answer was dependent on what really counted as me being a part of a fandom; my answer was ultimately "Depending, either Sailor Moon, Harry Potter, or Stargate: SG-1."

So, my first ship might have been Haruka/Michiru, or it may have been Jack/Daniel. Weirdly enough, even though I read Harry Potter before I watched Stargate, I didn't really ship anything from it until a little later. Now Sirius/Remus is one of my top ten. Just took me a little longer to get there.

14. What's your ideal meal? asked by [personal profile] reeby10

My ideal meal changes but the common thread between each of them is that it's a hearty meal with a lot of meat and/or potatoes and/or cheese, and probably some kind of sauce. I'm a huge foodie so I'd never be able to decide on one singular ideal meal. If I ever end up in prison on death row, I would have no idea what to ask for when they ask after my final meal.

-

I'm getting leg-shaking nerves re: the things I submitted for exchanges. I want to know if they'll be well-received! Just have to wait for reveals, one of which has been pushed back and will probably be pushed back again.

I have therapy in the morning and I'm actually not really looking forward to it. My therapist has been a little hard on me lately, and even if I know this is how it has to go, it's wearing on me a little. She feels I'm not giving her enough to work with and I feel like she's not helping me enough when it comes to getting my thoughts and feelings out. She's very much the type of therapist to insist that all the answers are inside me, and I am very much the kind of patient who wants to be asked leading questions so that I can have some sort of guidance and direction, which she refuses to do. I guess we'll see how it goes.

There's also another fire somewhere close by. I... think? It's once again time to play the "Is Someone Cooking Outdoors Nearby Or Is There Another Fire?" game.

13. What are some bands you hate that everybody else seems to love? asked by Michelle from Facebook

First of all, hate is a very strong emotion, and I don't take it lightly or throw it around when it doesn't really apply. I try not to hate anything if I can help it, unless it's truly terrible, because we don't need that sort of casual negativity. Music is just music, I can take it or leave it without hating anybody or their art.

That said, there are some bands that, if their music comes on the radio, I will change the station.

Putting this under a cut because 1) this is dangerous ground, and I know it, and 2) I am legitimately not trying to yuck anyone's yums here, I'm just answering the question. Nothing at all against anyone who may love these bands.

12. Also I'm very curious about what led you to switch platforms and join us here on Dreamwidth and how that's going for you. asked by [personal profile] runpunkrun

There was some drama over on tumblr. The sort of drama that devastates you emotionally and reminds you of all the reasons why you need to continue going to therapy.

I loved it there, but too much had changed for me personally, and I couldn't remain there while at the same time working on my mental health and trying to become a better version of myself that the people around me deserved instead of the shit show they got. Without an anchor though, a place where I could participate in fandom, it was almost worse. So I'm glad I was able to set up a quiet little home away from home here, surrounded by low-key, drama-free people.

I miss having close friends that I could talk to about most anything, and I miss roleplaying. I miss the memes and the askbox games and the aesthetic posting, but this is good for me here, I think.

-

At the risk of big-time exposing myself:

As Halloween nears, I am once again reminded that there is not enough werewolf AU porn and Mirror!verse Trek smut out there in the universe. As much as I would love to be the filth that I'd like to see in the world, I am too lazy and too stressed to write my own. I draw a chalk circle on my living room floor and summon the dark ones, the Halloween gods, the shameless smut peddlers of fandom, to heed my call and grant my every wish.

(I guess also if anyone has any recs, that works too.)

11.If you could be an officer on the Enterprise what position would you be? asked by [personal profile] pianogurl330

I would want a position that kept me out of most of the action, but was still an important contributor. I'd like to work in medbay, given I have a lot of education and experience in anatomy, pathology, physiology, first aid, and patient care.

Alternatively, I'd love to have a very niche space on one of the science teams that is involved with studying and handling animals from other worlds. Who would do this? A Xenobiologist? A Xenozoologist? I feel like people with this specialty would not be posted on every ship; not sure if the Enterprise would have anything like that.

I am living my best life. It is thundering like nobody's business out there. The winds have picked up into insane gusts. It's alternating between raining and hailing. This is most unusual, but I confess that I am loving it. Someone knocked on my door recently and when I went to see was there, I couldn't see anybody, which only added to this spooky atmosphere.

I also just signed up for another Halloween exchange, because I have zero self-control.

9. What's your comfort show/movie? The one you fall back to when everything around you is a shitshow. asked by [personal profile] dr_zook

I've got a few of these! Gotta keep a handful at the ready so I can switch things up, especially if everything around me is often a shitshow. It's usually X-Men: First Class, Jurassic Park, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Star Trek '09, or Pitch Perfect.

If I don't feel like I have the bandwidth to sit through a whole movie, I'll sometimes binge episodes of Parks and Rec, The Office, or this show called The Doghouse, where they pair rescue dogs with families who are looking to adopt. I always cry at that one.

Thanks for asking!

Things are most certainly not a shitshow today, thankfully.

It's raining. This is a very rare thing where I live. I've been struggling to survive the last couple of weeks, the temperatures ranging from 96 - 107 degrees every single day, the nights too unbearably warm and stuffy to get much sleep. Finally, finally we're getting some relief. I love the rain, and I've spent all evening since getting home from work early this afternoon lounging on the sofa by the window, drifting in and out of a light doze, listening to it. All the windows are open. The temperature is down into the 70's. I'm very happy.

Also, I got Krispe Kreme, which was a mistake. So good, though.
southernmedicine: (all things considered)
8. Do you like Star Wars? If so - what’s your fave SW movie & show? asked by [personal profile] quailfence

I do, a little bit? I'm a very casual SW fan in that I understand all the references and I can identify all the characters on sight, but I don't really know all the lore and whatnot. I got through half my life without having ever seen a single Star Wars movie, and when I did finally see them I ended up watching them in chrono order rather than order of release.

I know I'm probably in the minority but I actually liked Rogue One a lot more than the people around me seemed to. As for the rest of the movies, I liked them all a pretty baseline amount, if I'm honest, but I think I have to say that out of everything I've seen, what gripped me the most and actually made me excited to watch more as soon as possible was The Mandalorian. I also really liked Book of Boba Fett (largely because it tied in so much with The Mandalorian) and I did really enjoy Obi-Wan Kenobi.

As much as I love space and shows and movies and books that take place in space, I'm actually really surprised that my love for SW just never seemed to take off. Maybe I tried to get into it at the wrong time in my life? Maybe someday it'll all change.
southernmedicine: (a little rough)
7. Is there a fanwork you'd really like to make but are waiting to have the time/skill/brain/inspiration for it? asked by [personal profile] runpunkrun

Absolutely. I have a lot of ideas for longer, multi-chapter fics, but the only things I ever have the energy and time to complete are either drabbles or oneshot works that top out at around 3k words or so. I hold onto some of them, let go of others. Mostly the only things I finish are things that I sign up to write for other people, because that way there are at least stakes. If it's just for me, chances are it will never be done.

My Hanahaki fic in particular is something that is deeply personal to me, a sort of dedication to a real-life situation I've been in for a couple of years now. The trick with that one is that I can only seem to work on it when the relationship it's based on is making me feel particularly terrible and hurt and lonely. Things have been going pretty good lately, so I've had no real motivation to touch something that is meant to be so deeply angsty. My ability to write it and my ability to have a comfortable and happy friendship with this person are literally at odds, haha. And I may want both, but I definitely want the latter more.

Thanks for asking!
