I have stolen a meme from [personal profile] svgurl

Rules: give us the links to your fics with the most hits, second most kudos, third most comments, fourth most bookmarks, fifth most words, and fic with the fewest words.

Most Hits: Playdates (Hawkeye TV, Yelena Belova/Kate Bishop, G, 593 words) - 836 hits. A trio of snippets from the POV of the dogs, Lucky and Fanny.

Second Most Kudos: And Puppy Makes Three (Boyfriend Material, Oliver Blackwood/Luc O'Donnell, G, 1,294 words) - 78 kudos. Oliver and Luc add another member to their family.

Third Most Comments: Something Wicked (Bunnicula, G, 6,352 words) - 11 comments. Halloween themed hijinks involving a haunted doghouse and a witch's familiar.

Fourth Most Bookmarks: Lessons Learned (The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Illya Kuryakin/Gaby Teller, Teen, 3,298 words) - 4 bookmarks. From missions to moments. The important part is that Gaby is learning things.

Fifth Most Words: A Little Quality Time (Star Trek AOS, Gaila/Uhura, Mature) - 2,753 words. Academy era friends-to-lovers. And they were roommates.

Fic with the least words: Three double-drabbles tied at 200 words but I'll chose one.
Familiar Fancies (Star Wars, Sabine Wren [and sort of Shin Hati], G) - Sabine's musings lean toward the mysterious stranger and her familiar mannerisms.

So, back in 2023 (has it been that long???) I wrote a little ditty for [community profile] fandomtrees:

Playdates, a Hawkeye TV fic about Kate and Yelena's dogs.

Well! It turns out that [personal profile] peaked did a pod of my fic, which is really really cool and has never happened to me before, and I'm feeling some kind of way about it. It can be found HERE if y'all are interested in giving it a listen. A voice that was made for podficcing, in my opinion!

I swear I have searched high and low, in every corner and under every piece of furniture, for this damned fic I know I read and cannot find now. It's an itch in my brain. I need to find it and I can't. I'm climbing the walls.

Back in LJ's heyday you could at least pop into one of dozens of "hey help me find this fic!" communities and in all likelihood someone would know what super obscure fic you were badly describing and be able to help you. But I am despairing. I have filtered the tags ten ways to Sunday and read so, so many fics trying to find the right one, and no dice.

If you've read a lot of Trek AOS fics, specifically Mirror ones, and you think you might be able to help me with my problem, see me.
southernmedicine: (very srs work)
Again, haven't been here in a second! I think my brain wants me to think that things are a little more difficult right now than they actually are. Truth be told, I don't have a lot of complaints. I'm not working a lot of hours, so I guess not making as much money as I'd like is a little stressful, but. But!

All my writing deadlines have been met.
I'm sleeping well.
It's been very rainy, which I love.
The holidays are over, and life is... quiet.
Been doing an itsy bitsy amount of RP.
I've been knocking a lot of things off my watch list and reading a lot, fics and books.

I'm only signed up for one thing ([profile] fandomheartsex) and I have like a month to do it. It's a small minimum and for a fandom that I actually feel pretty confident about with a prompt that seems really easy.

I may drop the ball on [community profile] comment_bingo, unfortunately, unless I really get my ass in gear on that. Could try to make it my goal for the weekend.

I received three wonderful [community profile] fandomtrees gifts! All fics, this time.

That's about it. I want you guys to know that even if I haven't been posting or commenting, I have been reading your posts, trying to keep up with all of you. Adore you all! I hope everyone is doing well! I will get better about posting and commenting, it is a goal of mine.
southernmedicine: (keep it to yourself)
Happy New Year, everyone.

I am staying home because a) I am not one for parties, generally, b) I don't trust other people not to drive drunk or foolishly on this night, and c) It's raining, which means if I didn't trust people on the road before, I definitely don't now.

I'm having pizza, drinking the bottle of sparkling sake I picked up from a market in Little Tokyo last month, and writing up an exchange master letter with all of my fandoms, likes, and dislikes that I can just generally use for every exchange to save me the effort of having to fill out continuous requests. One and done!

In the meantime, I stole this "AO3 Wrapped" meme from [personal profile] mxcatmoon. It's not going to be very impressive on account of me only recently opening an AO3 account, but why not! I can compare next year's to this one and feel good about myself for all the progress I'm going to make.

Absolutely s-o-b-b-i-n-g about the three(!!!) drabbles I received for [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles. All three are Star Trek, and all three are being shared here once creators are revealed tomorrow!

In other news, my congestion is lingering, but I'm getting back into fighting form, and I'm ready to face my long shift at work tomorrow. I had better be in perfect health by the end of the week, because a friend from Texas is currently down in San Diego for a conference, and I'm driving down there Friday after work to join them for the weekend.

RIP NaNo. Being bedridden for a week threw me off more than I could afford, and I'll lose even more time when I'm away in San Diego this weekend. There's always the chance I could slam half a case of Space Coke when I've got the house to myself on Thanksgiving and some sort of miracle could occur, but I'm not banking on it. Best to turn my attention to the two fics I've got due in December, and maybe get something finished early for a change.

7. Is there a fanwork you'd really like to make but are waiting to have the time/skill/brain/inspiration for it? asked by [personal profile] runpunkrun

Absolutely. I have a lot of ideas for longer, multi-chapter fics, but the only things I ever have the energy and time to complete are either drabbles or oneshot works that top out at around 3k words or so. I hold onto some of them, let go of others. Mostly the only things I finish are things that I sign up to write for other people, because that way there are at least stakes. If it's just for me, chances are it will never be done.

My Hanahaki fic in particular is something that is deeply personal to me, a sort of dedication to a real-life situation I've been in for a couple of years now. The trick with that one is that I can only seem to work on it when the relationship it's based on is making me feel particularly terrible and hurt and lonely. Things have been going pretty good lately, so I've had no real motivation to touch something that is meant to be so deeply angsty. My ability to write it and my ability to have a comfortable and happy friendship with this person are literally at odds, haha. And I may want both, but I definitely want the latter more.

Thanks for asking!
southernmedicine: (think about it)
Tomorrow is finally, finally the day submissions are revealed over at [community profile] crossworks. I'm excited to see what my person submitted for me but more than that, I'm very nervous myself and I hope that the person I wrote for likes what I was able to come up with. It was a fandom I'd never written before and from a POV I did not feel confident in, but I did my best!

Also, I've still got lots of spots left for questions over at my AMA post, which is HERE. No question too invasive or spicy! Also, if you're running an AMA yourself, let me know so I can drop by and leave some questions for you, too!
southernmedicine: (chair)

This girl gets it.

It takes some wading through her account to find the real gems, but boy are there a lot of them.
southernmedicine: (chair)
Only two more small sections on this fic, and then it's done. I've got two full days to manage this, and I don't have to work either day, so it's a sure thing. Home run. Nothing but net. It's actually been easier than I thought it might be, getting this thing done. Once I got all my thoughts and useable concepts in order and finally started the damn thing, it wasn't so bad.

I do have a question for y'all though, since I've never actually written and then posted any adult content on AO3. What exactly is the deciding factor for choosing whether your fic is rated E or M? Where's the line?

The ant infestation has been very distracting, but we've got an exterminator coming on Friday, so! That'll be that. The gloves are coming off. Today we found them in the laundry room, in both the washing machine and the dryer. I don't know where these particular ants are coming from or who their queen is, but they are drunk and they need to go home.
southernmedicine: (a little rough)
With a fic hangover, that is.

You know the feeling. When you discover an incredible author who just nails it, perfectly capturing the essence of every character, effortlessly weaving a story that keeps you scrolling endlessly, and you end up spending days or weeks reading every single thing they've ever written. And then... there is no more.

I don't know what to read next. Every fic I try and start just falls flat. Please, deliver me from this hell.

AOS McKirk recs appreciated. Also prequel movie Cherik, and the Ritchie film incarnation of The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

In other news, I think I broke my toe by slamming it into this very dense, very heavy piece of furniture.

In other other news, I have finally beat down my tabs to only four open tabs, which has not happened in over a year, at least.

In other other other news, I have been an idea machine these past couple of days. I have lots of ideas, I just need to get off my lazy ass and focus up and actually get some of this stuff written.

Hope you're all doing well!
southernmedicine: (faded)
I'm really feeling like I want to write something centered around hanahaki disease, because every time I think of it or read a story about it or see fan art inspired by it, I feel something inside of me clench in response to my very real - and currently ongoing - personal experience with unrequited love. As a concept: living quietly with this condition that will one day kill me.

I like the idea of projecting; of tracking a character's lonely, secret struggle.

I like the concept of flower language, and the research I'd get to do in order to decide just what sort of flowers are involved here, based on who the character is, who the person they love is, and what their relationship is like.

It'd be angsty and dramatic and entirely self-indulgent.

I'd probably want to write McKirk, since that is the only pairing I seem to feel comfortable enough writing at present, only there already exists a McKirk fic about this. I've read it, and it was wonderful. In fact, it was only published about a month ago! I'll link it here, at the end of the entry, if anyone's interested in having a look.

So, dear readers, what would you do? How much of an unofficial crime is it to write a story that is probably bound to be pretty similar to somebody else's, even if only at it's roots? Is this a Remix situation? Do people still do Remixes? Would you, like, reach out to the other author?

I dunno. I dunno.

Regardless, here's a rec!

I am so tired. My morning shift at the clinic felt longer than eternity itself.

I got home not too long ago, made myself something to eat, and settled in to finish reading this fic I was really digging, and looking forward to finishing all morning. Got through a few more chapters before realizing that... it was a WIP.

And it has not been updated since 2014.
